The Life and Times of the Black Pig (book): A Biography of Ben Macdui by Ronald Turner: Ben Macdui is a 400-million year old lump of magma exposed by erosion and half chewed away by a glacier. Tales include Queen Victoria's climb of Ben Macdui (she did it in disguise) and an Irishman who cycled up it by accident. From the story of a deluded earl to the domestic life of the snow bunting, this is an entertaining, admiring and often very funny portrait of Britain's second highest mountain. Colin Brash provides some gloriously moody illustrations. History, geology, fairy stories and seventeen different routes up Ben Macdui. Descriptions of the ways up alternate with accounts of climbers and cattle thieves, the Grey Man and the Wolf of Badenoch, all adding up to an excellent read. : Outdoor Writers Guild Book of the Year 2008.
