Swingin' Fiddles are a young Shetland band who enjoy their music. Maggie Adamson and Laura Lockyer are their fiddlers who play naturally together. Laura's harmonies are sympathetic to the music. Astryd Jamieson is the pianist - she uses traditional Shetland style accompaniment, (taught by Violet Tulloch). Their lively approach to music has taken them to Norway, America, Canada, Ireland and several British festivals in the two years they've been together. Recently described as "A whole new generation of Shetland Music".
Astryd Jamieson: comes from a musical family, her mum, Debbie Scott, dad Ronnie Jamieson and Grandad Frank Jamieson are all well known Shetland composers and fiddlers. Astryd began playing the piano at the age of 7 with Linda Peterson, and has studied Shetland style vamping with Violet Tulloch.
Maggie Adamson: began playing fiddle at the age of eight, with Bernadette Porter and is currently taught by Alan Gifford. She is enthusiastic about music and plays various instruments and in different styles. Maggie has held the titles of Shetland Intermediate and also Junior Young Fiddler of the Year, and has been successful in several competitions for Fiddle in mainland Scotland for the last 3 years.
Laura Lockyer: started playing the fiddle at the age of 10, initially with Bernadette, then with Trevor Hunter, currently she is studying with Margaret Scollay. Laura’s Grandad, Jim Marwick of Orkney was her inspiration to carry on with traditional music. Laura enjoys a variety of musical styles. She was Shetland’s young Fiddler of the Year in 2003, and has also had consistent success in Scottish fiddle competitions. |
