Sharon Hassan has established herself as one of the top young fiddlers in Scotland having already toured extensively in the UK and abroad taking in established festivals such as the Festival Interceltique de Lorient, Celtic Connections (the largest festival of Celtic music in the World), The Shetland Folk Festival, Ports of the World festival in Saint-Malo, as well as gigs in Moscow, Barcelona, Bilbao, Tuscany, Donegal, Cork and New York. An ex-member of the Gaelic band ‘Dochas’ Sharon was one of the first graduates from the Scottish Music degree course at the RSAMD in Glasgow. She is as much in demand for her teaching skills as for her playing ability and three of her recent pupils are studying fiddle at the RSAMD this year. Sharon enjoys teaching groups of all ages and abilities and has also worked with people who have special needs. Her sense of humour and dedication to the music provide a relaxed atmosphere in which participants can learn more about the tunes they are playing as well as getting help with their technique, ornamentation, harmonies, improvisation and timing. She has been a groupwork and fiddle tutor at the ‘Gordon Gaitherin’ in Kemnay and ‘SCaT’ in Aberdeen for many years and has also taught at a number of Feisean. Sharon is also in great demand as a visiting tutor at fiddle workshops and has taught for most of the major fiddle workshop projects in Scotland. Sharon’s new projects include releasing her debut album “One Fine Day” which is partly funded by the Scottish Arts Council. This will be available for purchase from April 2005 and will feature a number of guest musicians including: Pete MacCallum, James Ross, Kathleen Boyle (Dochas), Davy Cattanach (ex-Old Blind Dogs and The Pictones) and Steve Ransome. These days Sharon can be found gigging with her own band, Hoolichan and new Aberdeen based band, North-East Gael with Brian Cromarty and Tom Roche. She also plays with the popular North-east ceilidh band, Iron Broo. |
