Saltfishforty are Douglas Montgomery and Brian Cromarty. the sound is an energetic combination of Brian's rowdy songs and Douglas' gutsy spontaneous fiddling. This isn't the first time their talents have been paired; Douglas and Brian have been the midfield powerhouse of Burray Football Club for many years and know each others game inside out.
An internationally acclaimed fiddler, Douglas has toured Scotland, USA and France with the Smoking Stone Band. His playing slides easily from gutsy tune to inspired counter melody. an itinerant fiddle teacher in Orkney for eight years, Douglas has released two albums and toured Canada with his pupils. Douglas was recently nominated for the Yamaha Instrumental Instructor of the Year (2003). he is right footed.
A latter day member of the Smoking Stone Band, Brian was drawn back to his Orkney roots via an extended detour through rock n roll. he brings a direct, lively style to the sound and the ideal complement to Douglas' fiddling. Brian teaches and plays around Aberdeen. he is left footed.
Brian and Douglas have played and written together for years with the Smoking Stone Band, Duncan McLean's Lone Star Stones and cult orcajun stompers the Silver Penguins. Saltfishforty's sound is a melting pot of the traditional, bluegrass, swing and blues of the earlier bands. their superior fitness and sporting prowess enables them to play at speeds that other, non-athletic musicians can never hope to attain.
Douglas and Brian will be hanging up their boots at the end of the season to concentrate on Saltfishforty. neither was really that good at football anyway.
