Nick Keir was born in Edinburgh and was educated at Edinburgh Academy and Stirling University, where he gained a degree in literature. While at Stirling he formed Finn mac Cuill ("astonishingly gifted music", The Scotsman) and later the musical theatre group "The Finn macCuill Folkshow," In the late Seventies he had a spell with 7:84 Theatre (Scotland) writing and performing the bulk of the songs for the shows "Joe's Drum" and "Swings and Roundabouts", and a short stint as a soloist. In 1982 he was invited to join The McCalmans, Scotland's top folk music trio, and has recorded some 15 CDs and continues to tour all over the world with them, taking time out to write the music for a number of theatre pieces and to do occasional acting work.In the 2004 Edinburgh Festival Fringe he presented his own show "The Fires of Edinburgh" in Diverse Attractions.
Nick plays guitar, mandolin, whistles and moothie, and his songs are a staple part of The McCalmans repertoire. They have also been widely covered by other singers. After a short season of living in Denmark, Nick now lives in Edinburgh's Southside.
