    Meantime

In a time when traditional music is enjoying a renaissance among a host of new, young and vibrant musicians, it is interesting to consider the position of the Gaelic language in the genre. Gaelic has one of the world’s richest heritage of traditional song and many bands and artistes have harnessed this resource and on it stamped a contemporary sound. Old songs given new interpretations, old interpretations given new airings. But what of new songs in the language?

These four traditional musicians from the west coast of Scotland are making their mark in the Gaelic world by bringing new ideas to both their instrumental and vocal material. The four band members, all Gaelic speakers  live in various parts of the Highlands. While  respectful and proud of their rich musical heritage the band are creating new tunes and songs to add to this great tradition. It is said that the have invigorated and refreshed the Gaelic music canon.  Their CDs feature brand new songs in Gaelic composed by various members of the band. Excerpts taken from Hi-Arts.

    Meantime are:
David MacLennan (guitar, bass, banjo, vocals)
Malcolm Munro (piano accordion, melodeon, keyboards, vocals)
    David Boag (fiddle, harmonica, vocals)
Norman MacArthur (pipes, bass, guitar, vocals)
