Described by 'The Herald' as possessing “a truly stunning voice”, Gaelic singer Maeve Mackinnon is a native of Glasgow and a rising star in the Scottish folk music scene.
An honours graduate of the RSAMD’s Scottish Music degree, her singing started to come into its own as a finalist for the Young Traditional Musician of the Year award in 2005. Her performance at the finals secured her an album deal from Footstompin Records, and she released her first album in 2007. “Don’t Sing Lovesongs”, a cutting edge album of diverse musical influences, showcased songs in both Gaelic and English. On its release, the album quickly garnered much critical acclaim and prompted the Scotland on Sunday newspaper to write in a five star review,
“This is one of the most absorbing albums to be released in Scotland in a long time”.
A string of accolades followed, including the award “Up and Coming Artist of the year” at the Trad Awards in 2007. In 2008 “Don’t Sing Lovesongs” was included in the “Classic Albums” series at Celtic Connections 2008, allowing the album material to be performed “big band” style. She was one of the youngest artists whose work was honoured in the series, alongside folk legends such as Paul Brady and Andy Irvine.
Mackinnon was nominated for Gaelic Singer of the Year in 2008 and is currently working on a follow-up solo album.
