Born in Glasgow in 1942, John Purser is well known as a composer, broadcaster and writer; a poet and playwright, and a musicologist of some renown.
His acclaimed book "Scotland's Music" published in 2007 encompasses traditional, classical, and popular music placing them in their historical contexts. This is an all-embracing account of the history of music and musicians in Scotland stretching from the Stone Age to the present day. Adding vital information to the history of Scotland itself, it is copiously illustrated with examples of music and images of musicians, manuscripts, and instruments. Much more than a second edition to its award-winning predecessor, the text and illustrations have been substantially revised and extended to take account of new discoveries and research.

John Purser was awarded the "Services to Industry Award" for this work at the 2007 Scots Trad Music Awards.
