If the Grants Piping Championships, now the Glenfiddich, is the yardstick by which great pipers are judged, especially as it is 'by invitation only' and the invitations are carefully handed out to winners of other competitions and Championships, then there can be no doubt whatsoever that Iain MacFadyen deserves his place in this series. At the time of the making of this CD he had always been on the prize-list but, more importantly, has been the outright winner on four occasions, in1977, 1981, 1984 and 1986. Equally memorable and important and easily confirming his stature in the world of piping, Iain was also the proud holder of a 100% attendance record at the Silver Chanter competition held at Dunvegan Castle, home of the MacLeods and home of the legendary MacCrimmons on the Isle of Skye, winning this competition on four occasions. Born in Glasgow, the youngest member of the now famous piping family - brothers John, Hector, Duncan, and sister Freena were notable players so it is fair to say that Iain was born into piping. Advanced tuition from the late Roderick MacDonald gave Iain a great flair for Piobaireachd in particular, and piping in the family gave him a strong feeling for competition. Both have stayed with him as the successful results show. Iain served as a piper in the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders and later taught piping in the local schools around the Kyle of Lochalsh.
