    Glasgow Gaelic Musical Association

The Glasgow Gaelic Musical Association (aka ‘the GG) was formed in 1893 by a group of exiles from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. The objects of the Association as set out in its constitution are ‘The advancement of the study and performance of vocal music, the formation of a choir or choirs and the performance of Gaelic songs in particular but other competent activities may be undertaken.’ The other competent activities have taken the form of competing at Local and the National Mod of An Comunn Gaidhealich and an annual concert together with ceilidhs and dances, outings and picnics, indicative of a strong social element..

The GG was the first Gaelic Choir to appear on TV and though they have not so far featured on ’Top of the Pops’ they did provide backing for Rod Stewart’s All among the blooming heather’. The BBC’s recently announced £25 million Gaelic Television Service will surely provide a further outlet for choir activities. In 2008 Kenneth Thomson's 25 years as conductor were celebrated in a gala concert held at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and, with the issue of a CD titled Slighe an Airgid (The Silver Way).
