Gillian is twenty years old, and comes from the Isle of Arran on the West Coast of Scotland. Hailing from a family of musicians she was introduced to traditional Scots and Irish music at an early age, and began playing the fiddle at age ten. By the age of thirteen she had already recorded an album with family band The Angels Share, during which time were performing regularly at Folk Festivals including Lorient Festival in Brittany.
Since then Gillian has been rapidly increasing experience in all areas of Traditional music, using her talents as a fiddle player and singer. This includes performances at Celtic Connections, various appearances on Radio Scotland, and teaching at schools and summer schools throughout Scotland. Gillian is presently in the honours year of the BA(Scottish Music) course at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and intends to make a career as a professional musician.
In January 2001 at Celtic Connections Gillian won the prestigeous Young Scottish Traditional Musician 2001 Award. She had to perform for 15 minutes singing one song and playing two instrumental sets. On this occasion she was accompanied by Malcolm Stitt on guitar. The prizes for winning included the TMSA Quaich, a record contract and a invitation to the Vancouver and Mission folk festivals.
