Gavin is a native of Dumfriesshire where the Maxwell family has its roots. He has been playing the bagpipes since the age of seven - following in his father's footsteps. His first teacher was Pipe Major Jack Oakes and from the start, Gavin's natural ability and enthusiasm was obvious. He won his first competition a year later at the under fourteen level. His technique was further enhanced by William Geddes and Tony MacDonald and since then Gavin has competed regularly, winning gold medals both locally and nationally.
